“Families Praising the Greatest of God” The Book of Psalms The Book of Psalms was written primarily by David, but there are at least seven other writers including Moses, Solomon, Asaph, Heman, and the sons of Korah. The word psalm comes from a Greek word that means “ a poem sung to musical accompaniment.” The Hebrew name for psalms is tehillim, which means “praises”. The Book of Psalms has been called the hymnal of the Jewish nation. In the Book of Psalms, David teaches us the power of praise through songs. There are songs of assurance. “But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation, I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.” These songs of assurance allows us to praise God and express our trust in him, tell the depths of his mercy towards us, thank him for the earnest of our salvation, express gratitude for his blessings, and show forth the joy of the Lord in a heartfelt song of praise! We can learn from David the psalmist, by refusing to focus on the problems of life and instead focus on the goodness of God. We can have a song of praise for God in our hearts. In the process we will lift ourselves from distress and depression to a state of confident faith and trust in God! The scriptures encourage and admonish us to praise the Lord. As it was with David and the psalmists, let it also be said of us that we bless and praise the Lord at all times. To praise the Lord is to adore, bless, honor, and exalt him. Like David, when we think of the goodness of the Lord and all that He has done for us, the natural outcome is to take time to praise |
